Wildcats win 4 out of 5 in New Mexico
The Fruita Wildcats U18 baseball team won two games Sunday to finish 4-1 in the Piedra Vista High School Weekend baseball tournament in Farmington, N.M.
The Wildcats beat El Dorado 6-5 in extra innings Sunday as Luke Goodrich singled home Casey Mays with the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Mays, who had three hits, opened the frame with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice. After Goodrich fouled off a squeeze bunt attempt, he laced a single to left field to end the game.
Goodrich and Marshall Gore also collected three hits, and Cody Basinger had two hits for Fruita. Kale Smith picked up the win on the mound, pitching the final three innings in relief of starter Colton Chamberlain.
The Wildcats then beat Goddard 6-4 as Ned Smith pitched a complete game and struck out five. Mays and Basinger each collected two hits. Gore hit a two-run single in Fruita’s three-run first inning, and the Wildcats (19-7) led thereafter.
■ In its two games Saturday, Fruita lost 14-4 to Cleveland, a team from Rio Rancho, N.M., then came back to batter Valencia 16-5 behind a 17-hit attack. Sam Graf collected four hits and drove in three runs for the Wildcats, while Gabe Treider had three hits, and Logan McLennan and Basinger had two hits apiece.
■ Friday, the Wildcats beat the Piedra Vista River Cats 3-1, with starting pitcher Kale Smith earning the win.
