Winter wonderland

Say this for the blast of arctic weather that arrived in western Colorado late Tuesday evening: It made an already-promising ski season look even brighter. When Powderhorn ski resort opens this Saturday, it should have plenty of white powder for skiers and boarders. So should every other ski area in the state.

It’s not just skiers who should be pleased. The significant snows that have arrived so far this year point toward a decent water year next spring and summer. There’s no guarantee, of course, how the entire winter will unfold. But it’s a good start.

Even so, the 6 inches of snow and more here in the valley, followed by the forecast Big Chill that is expected to keep temperatures frigid through the weekend, isn’t pleasant fare for those of us who prefer the balmier weather conditions that generally inhabit the high desert.

The snow is needed, but some sunshine and warmer temperatures will be welcome.
