You Said It, April 3, 2016

I want to jump on the bandwagon of upset people that I’m sure is now starting for the recently received invoices from the Grand Valley Drainage District. I do believe that the services to take care of and pay for stormwater are valid. However, I think it’s about time for the drainage district to be dissolved and those responsibilities be taken over by the city of Grand Junction and Mesa County. By doing so, it would streamline and improve stormwater management, not to mention save money.

So explain to me how Colorado Mesa University can stop offering optional Bibles to the nursing graduates, yet nothing was said about firing a coach who bullies a homosexual baseball player. How embarrassing and appalling.

Never once in my 67 years of life have I uttered the words that someone should be killed for any reason. To me it just isn’t healthy or smart. But I found out in my high school days (not in Grand Junction) that a sports-related coach can get away with anything.

It leaves me speechless to read that Sean McKinney is not being fired or even punished for his homophobic remarks as an assistant coach at CMU. This is what we want our students hearing from role models? As the mother of a homosexual child, it quite literally makes me sick to my stomach to hear anyone speak supportively of the vicious, brutal way Matthew Shepard was killed in Wyoming.

Remember when all the liquor stores said being open on Sundays would put them out of business? I’ve not seen a single one close down. Here we go again. Oh, and imagine when people vacationing in Colorado — a cool state — can’t buy wine or liquor at the grocery store. What, is Colorado as weird as Utah?

It’s not about quality of life here in the Grand Valley, it’s about quality of leadership.

For the person who is greatly concerned about “an area with a reputation and a clear tolerance for far right wacko political beliefs,” implying that Mesa County fits that description: We have lived here in Mesa County for 55 years, and one of the many reasons is the citizens’ support for faith, strong families and constitutional government (conservatism). Has it ever occurred to you that calling people names if they disagree with you is a form of bigotry? The terms “far right” and “wacko” are just slurs used by small-minded, intolerant people who, if they’re so disturbed by others living here, maybe should have stayed where they came from.

The rest of the state has taken more than $1 billion out of the hands of the Mexican cartels and invested in our communities. I would like to know how much El Chapo and the Mexican drug cartels are paying our local city and county officials to keep legal marijuana out of Mesa County.

What a lucky man — Dartanin Mitchell gets to crochet mittens for prison guards for the rest of his life. Had it been my young daughter that he smashed in a robbery or my little baby that he broke 25 times before he killed him, he’d be 6 feet under, feeding worms with a BB gun firmly planted in his backside.

Most cyclists out there wearing CMU jerseys are pretty polite. However, Easter Sunday, midday, there were two guys on mountain bikes with CMU jerseys riding side-by-side up Little Park Road, holding up traffic. How rude. Most CMU riders have gotten the memo and ride single-file when cars are on the road.

Beware when having a yard sale. People are coming in groups. While one talks to you, the others rip you off. And it’s not just small stuff.

I recently spent a fairly lengthy stay at the Grand Junction Veterans Affairs Medical Center. While there I was very impressed with the professional, compassionate, even indulgent care they provided. If any of our newer veterans are leery of the VA (as were Vietnam veterans, for good reason), the VA has done a 180 from that era. So quell any qualms about the local VA. They’re great.

We were out March 11 at Mi Mexico having dinner and a fun time, with my two sisters and I celebrating our sister’s birthday. The crew gathered at our table, put a big sombrero on her and sang “Happy Birthday.” A nice couple offered to take pictures of us together. When we were ready to leave, we asked for our bill. The couple had paid it. Thank you, and we will pass it on.
