You Said It Column September 20, 2008

• Wow! A month ago my party supported abstinence for teens, marriage before sex and stay-at-home moms. Today they celebrate a woman whose choices go against everything I believe in. When did I become a Democrat?

• Of all the comments printed in You Said It over the years, the one complaining about being tired of bailing out the residents of New Orleans is possibly the most ignorant one yet published. People are victims of natural disasters all over our country. People are evacuated from their homes in Colorado due to floods, people in California are evacuated due to wildfires, people on the East Coast may be evacuated because of an impending hurricane. All of these people are entitled to help from their state and the federal government. I bet the author would really be upset if the citizens of New Orleans took his advice and moved here.

• Memo to Hillary Clinton: You may also be female, but thank God, Sarah Palin is not any thing like you! Memo to Sarah Palin: You are very refreshing, and we are so happy you are no Hillary Clinton!

• Longtime congressman and a person who makes decisions for the rest of us says he didn’t know he was required to report his income from rental property. Blames his wife. He also got an interest-free loan on rental property. Will the IRS turn a blind eye because he is an arrogant politician? That’s the test. They fail it and they lose more respect.

• To the person (or people) that thinks that they shouldn’t have to pay for new school district buildings: I don’t think you get it. Remember, all the people before you have paid for your schooling and school buildings. If I thought like you, I would say I’m not old, why should I have to pay for Social Security.

• I just realized where I had seen Sarah Palin before: It’s Dick Cheney in a shirt. The more it changes, the more it stays the same.

• Cheers to the mother at the Rock Jam who used a noise- cancelling headset for her baby! Jeers to all the parents who brought their 5- to 15-year-olds to watch an adult show like Kid Rock. Extra jeers to those parents who were also intoxicated and to the traffic controllers who forced us onto I-70 with hundreds of drunken drivers. Where was the DUI checkpoint or patrols? Not between Mack and Loma. I’ll take a bottleneck over a fatality any day.

• Another year of Rock Jam has passed, and I wonder why so-called adults turn into raging idiots. They show no respect for themselves or for others. Take the blonde woman in pink who was asked to take a picture of two young girls Friday. What she did was stick it in her bra and took pictures of her breast. The next night the same woman was standing in a chair with a pink boa, breasts exposed. When she fell off the chair from being so drunk, I thought that was it. But no, she climbed back up into the chair and was actually worse. People were pushing and shoving so much we ended up leaving earlier than we wanted. I really believe there needs to be more security to protect the people who came to watch the performers so they may do so in peace.

• I love the new Riverside Parkway. Please tell me the 40 mph speed limit is temporary.

• I am seriously having a hard time with the Republican candidates stating that they are Christians and God is guiding them. If I recall, God wants us to treat others as we would be treated. I do not believe that means taking joy in putting our opponents down or quoting untrue statements about them over and over again to get votes. Can we hear a little more about how you are going to help our country?

• Obama supporters with unbounded jealousy should get over Sen. McCain’s selection of Gov. Sarah Palin, as it was Obama’s choice not to select Sen. Hillary Clinton.

• Dwellings, be it trailer home or million-dollar home, do not belong at the base of Mount Garfield. It’s just wrong.

• I was so pleased that Mr. Martin’s guns were returned to him. Reading of the incident made me wonder what country I was in. Having had something similar happen years ago, I know the practice of confiscating people’s property is an abuse of power in some, if not most. cases. The law would not have been so important had the confiscated goods not been so desirable and coveted by the people making the decisions.

• What is it with people complaining about the school district giving a million dollars to the college? The problem is, that most people don’t know how much the school district uses the college facilities and the college is not charging for that use: soccer games at the new facility, other sporting events, awards ceremonies, scholarship presentations, music events, etc. The list goes on and on. This is a unique situation between Mesa State College and the school district. No other college and school district in the state work and share together so well. If the college charged for all the times that the district used their facilities, it would be well over a million.

• I can honestly say I’m thankful I’m not from Arizona, and even more that I’m not from Alaska.

• When thinking about who to vote for in November, as much as I hate to say, one has to consider McCain’s age. His father died at age 71. Do we really want Palin president? She has no experience. And to all the Hillary lovers, is this the president you want?
