The horticultural science is clear that the spring practice of burning last year’s growth of dead weeds and grasses does nothing but ill for the soil. Beneficial organisms are destroyed, the soil is made more alkaline (which is already a problem in the Grand Valley), and the plant matter that would become mulch and nutrients for the soil goes into the air in the form of smoke. Outside of burning debris from irrigation ditches, the ritual of spring burning is really only for the fun of playing with fire.

We want to thank the person who paid for our lunch at Village Inn on our 39th wedding anniversary. It was such a nice surprise on such a special day.

I long for the days when our high schools were small enough to include all interested students in athletic activities. Now, with so many students, they have to audition, and only so many can be selected.

In response to the distribution of food stamps. I’m one of those “animals” that you are making reference to, and I’m thankful that after losing most of my 401K, and making some bad investments that this program is available. No, I do not have kids and I do not pay property taxes, as I rent. But after 35 years of working hard I am one of the group of hard-working people who have fallen on hard times. Maybe you should stop and think this could happen to you or a member of your family.

Thank you for publishing the controversial Doonesbury comic strip dealing with abortion/terminating a pregnancy. I applaud your courage and appreciate your willingness to take a risk. I’m sure there will be many outraged and outrageous responses. I wanted to be sure a supportive response was also heard.

I guess the old slogan “Drug Free School Zone” is to be replaced by “Drug Tolerant School Zone.” Another example of the slow decline of society.

What a loss it would be to lose Tim Tebow when he has inspired all the members on the team to feel valued. If the Broncos go with Peyton Manning, it will end up a one-man show, just as it was with the Colts when he was playing. At least Tebow still knows how to spell humble.

I guess the new police station and CMU Orchard Avenue dorms aren’t on the Blue Band Wagon.

I think it is time to have the federal and state taxes on a gallon of gasoline posted on all the gas pumps so that the public understands who is really making the profit on a gallon of gasoline. The balance of the cost is split between as many a four other providers.

I want to thank the gentleman who bought my family’s dinner at Rib City Grill. When we asked for the check, the waitress pointed to a man and said he paid for our dinner. My husband forgot he was wearing his veteran hat. He proudly served in the military and says “he wouldn’t trade it for anything.” It is so nice to know there are good people out there who appreciate veterans.

I don’t understand these two-wheel pedal pushers. Don’t they realize that once the Monument allows them a race, it is open to all races: motorcycles, ATVs, stockcars, horses. Go somewhere else. We love our monument like it is.

So the pot smokers want to legalize marijuana like alcohol. Right. Since alcohol has had no ill effect on our society, why not? Unlike alcohol you can’t avoid the second-hand smoke so it gets in the system of anyone who happens to be near someone who is smoking. Try and explain that to your boss when you fail a drug test because, legal or not, there will be jobs that won’t allow you to smoke pot.
