Local school board races should remain local and nonpartisan. Money given with an agenda, by someone outside the community, should be rejected by the candidates.

The teachers’ union endorsing school board candidates? Isn’t this like asking the fox to guard the henhouse?

I certainly don’t condone a substitute teacher hitting a student with a book, but if I were a parent of one of those fourth-graders, I’d ask myself, “Does my kid misbehave in school so badly that a teacher could get frustrated to that degree?”

Where was the principal at Chatfield when a substitute teacher had an out-of-control classroom? Surely it was known to be an “out-of-control classroom” and the principal should have been checking before it became a “last straw” for the substitute.

As a former Broadway Elementary School student, I would like to say that the recent incident with Mr. Easton by no means reflects the man he is. While Mr. Easton made a terrible mistake as an educator, in my six years at Broadway, I only ever knew him as a genuinely kind, caring and respectful principal.

We regret to inform you that we won’t be able to thank anyone for buying dinners anymore. All the extra income used for this purpose will be used for paying for everyone else’s health care insurance. Goodbye to what was left of the economy.

I don’t care about bringing back PE or music classes to the school, I worry about what to eat at the end of the day. My house taxes already are going up $37 to fight the mosquitoes and now they want another $133 for Amendment 66. When does this all stop?

I will not support any increase in school funding until we issue vouchers to parents for school choice. Save our public schools by giving control of children’s education back to parents. Demand a voucher system.

Hey, Pete and Stan, quit whining and live within your budget. I have tightened my belt, you should try the same.

I hope our county commissioners do not give business owners $500,000 in refunds while laying off county workers who could be spending money on RVs, cars, houses and supporting their families. That’s what the last commissioners did.

It seems to me that if the sheriff is able to eliminate the equivalent of 27 full-time positions without sacrificing services and can still justify spending $160,000 for a full body scanner, they are doing just fine in their budget. Makes you wonder how much fluff was in his budget to begin with.

It is so good to see all the new concrete work recently finished on the Riverfront Trail. Great job, workers, and thanks.

To the person or persons who called the fire department on Oct. 5 stating there was an antifreeze spill in my parking lot, you should think before you act. It would have to be one big antifreeze spill to cover 5 bays. It was floor soap.

Why has the Colorado State Patrol and Mesa County Sheriff’s Department abandoned the Highway 50 speedway from Orchard Mesa through Whitewater? It can’t be from the loss of revenue, they always had someone pulled over. This stretch has become very dangerous with aggressive driving and excessive speeding due to the lack of enforcement.

I was recently at Grand Junction Regional Airport to pick up family. There was no place to sit except “dirty” couches and cheap-looking hard chairs. There is no place to get water or coffee. Whatever happened to the local side of Subway? It is always closed down. What a disgrace for locals and visitors coming into our airport.

To the old dinosaur who doesn’t want to teach my son karate because he has mild autism: Read up on the discrimination laws and take some online courses. Being impaired is quite common these days and you have reactive attachment disorder. It’s time for you to retire and close your school because now I am offended.

To the gentleman who was driving the white pickup truck on Orchard Mesa on Oct. 9: We cyclists are wondering why you abruptly pulled in front of us, gunned your engine and cursed us. There were four of us at a stop and on the shoulder and so were not impeding your progress in any way. Do you just hate cyclists in general or do you hate anyone who isn’t like you? Just wondering.
