Your Town, Aug. 19, 2012

Perhaps you noticed the display ads that ran during July, seeking information from nonprofit clubs and organizations to be included in the Users Guide listings?

Formerly the Answer Book, the Users Guide comprises club and organization listings, information and more on local and national government, cities and towns, recreation options, etc. The 2012 Users Guide will be inserted in the Sunday, Aug. 26 Daily Sentinel.

Along with the requested information for a listing, clubs and organizations were asked, in the ad, to include a brief note about themselves — this was to help determine under what category the club/organization should be listed — arts, health or support group, business, youth, recreation, etc.

A big “thank you” is extended to all who submitted the information. Some wrote a short sentence describing their group, others went a little further, offering a paragraph or two ( more) detailing their organization’s mission, history and notes of interest.

Because of space limitations, all the organization tidbits can’t be included in the Users Guide, but I am excited to be able to share it here in Your Town, with the community, beginning next week.

During the next few months, I plan to use some of these submissions in Your Town, highlighting the various clubs/organizations or non-profits.

If you missed the opportunity to be included in the Users Guide, don’t fret. Drop me a line or two describing your club/organization or nonprofit, using the information below, and the subject line “Your Town,” and I’ll shine the spotlight your way, as space permits.

Two Rivers Cribbage Club will host the first American Cribbage Congress sanctioned tournament, Aug. 24–26, at the Clarion Inn, 755 Horizon Drive.

According to a news release, “the tournament should draw local, Front Range and even out-of-state peggers, with the final count estimated to be 50–60 competitors.”

There are several events ranging from the early bird (nine game) competition starting at 7 p.m. Friday; the main tournament (22 game) all day Saturday; and playoffs the morning of Sunday, Aug. 26.

A nine game special tournament will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, and the next
tournament (nine game) happens Sunday morning. Cash prizes and awards will be given.

Because of the tournament, The Two Rivers Cribbage Club will not meet this week.

The next get-together is planned for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 6, at Hospice.

Grand Mesa Chorus Sweet Adelines is welcoming its newest member, baritone singer Stephanie Hyrup.

Hyrup, a retired adoption social worker and birth-parent counselor, has served as a volunteer counselor and volunteer trainer at the Pregnancy Center for nine years.

A singer since high school who learned to harmonize by listening to the radio, she likes to knit, read and cook. Hyrup is married, has two adult children and six grandchildren ranging in age from 18 months to 15 years.

Grand Mesa Chorus rehearsed from 6:30–9:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Redlands United Methodist Church, 527 Village Way.

All women ages 16 and older are welcome to audition. Call Shirley at 255-9419 or visit grandmesachorus.org for information.

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the 16th annual Fruita Lioness Club spaghetti dinner, from 5–8 p.m. Sept. 28, at the Fruita Community Center, during the Fruita Fall Festival.

The dinner features spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, lemonade and coffee. Cost is $4 for adults, $2 for ages 6–12 and ages 5 and younger are free. The cake walk will offer opportunities to win a cake — but the real winner in the deal is the Lower Valley Fire Department, because 100 percent of the proceeds from the dinner will be donated to the department.

Call 260-9967 for more information.
