The Easter Bunny stopped by with a large festive basket that was overflowing with scrumptious, low-calorie and fat-free community news, and I thought I’d share some it with you.

Lowe’s and Habitat for Humanity Mesa County are seeking local women volunteers to work one day on a Habitat construction site during the nine-day National Women Build Week taking place May 1-9.

Construction or home improvement experience is not necessary.

The event challenges women to devote at least one day toward elimination or poor housing. The event is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program, underwritten by Lowe’s, which recruits, educates and nurtures women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable houses in their communities.

All volunteers will work with an experienced construction manager. The build date will be May 1 and, if needed, Saturday, May 8.

The Dog-n-Jog 2010 event taking place April 17 at Bananas Fun Park will benefit the homeless pets at Roice-Hurst Humane Society.

Check-in is at 9 a.m. and the event starts at 10 a.m. Cost is $20 per entrant and includes a T-shirt (additional T-shirts can be purchased for $5 at the event).

Participating dogs are required to have proof of vaccinations upon check-in at the event. Dogs must be on leashes no longer than 6 feet, with a maximum of two dogs per person. You can walk your dog, walk without a dog or request to walk a Roice-Hurst dog.

There will be food and beverages, agility demonstrations and various pet-related booths and vendors after the event.

The Nashville Songwriters Association International is establishing a chapter in western Colorado and will host an informational meeting at 7 p.m. April 14 at Canyon Creek Bed & Breakfast, 820 E. Main St. in Montrose.

Nashville-based professional songwriter Bernie Nelson will be on hand to help launch the chapter and will discuss the benefits of the association to the local music community.

Montrose singer and songwriter Yvonne Meek has been selected as chapter coordinator. She will discuss the plans and opportunities for the western Colorado chapter. The meeting is open to all interested songwriters and musicians. The cactophiles with the Chinle Cactus & Succulent Society now meet in the Sagebrush Room at Mesa County Fairgrounds, 2785 U.S. Highway 50, at 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month.

Meetings include education programs, plant exchanges, gardening information and socializing.

Proceeds from the Grand Mesa Middle School’s third annual five kilometer walk or run April 22 will go to the school’s Positive Behavior Support incentives fund.

The race beings at 6 p.m. at the school, 585 31 1/2 Road. The course is from Grand Mesa Middle School to Long’s Park and back. Late registration and packet pickup is at 5:15 p.m. Registration forms are at the Grand Mesa Middle School main office, or download a form from

Prizes will be given to the winning adult and student and there will be a prize drawing for all others. Wendy’s will provide a complimentary potato bar following the race.
