Zavala helps Indians stay unbeaten in SWL

Montrose’s Jorge Rojas Ramirez breathes a sigh of relief after making a save Thursday in the Indians’ 2-0 victory over Grand Junction.

MONTROSE — In a hard-fought, physical game, Jose Zavala made sure the Montrose High School soccer team came out on top against Grand Junction.

After a scoreless first half Thursday, Zavala stole the ball from a Tiger defender three minutes into the second half, before scoring the first goal.

“It was a pretty difficult shot,” Zavala said.

Once Zavala broke the ice, Grand Junction (4-3-1, 2-2-1 Southwestern League) tried to even the score, sending shot after shot at Montrose goalie Jorge Rojas Ramirez. Ramirez made the save on each shot.

“We came out a little flat,” Indians coach Jim Pavlich said. “I think the team played well.”

With Ramirez keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard, the Indians’ offense got going again, led by Zavala. Eliseo Gomez scored the final goal, with Zavala getting the assist.

Despite shutting out Grand Junction, Pavlich knows Montrose (8-1, 5-0 SWL) will see a different Tigers team next Tuesday at Walker Field.

“I think Junction is going to be a different team when we go and play them Tuesday,” Pavlich said.
