Annual COSMIC Ski Mountaineering Race is Saturday at Powderhorn

Powderhorn Mountain Resort is hosting the annual COSMIC Ski Mountaineering Race on Saturday, and expect some of the top ski mountaineers in the world to test themselves against the resort’s grueling course.

In this up-and-down ski mountaineering event, skiers will use climbing skins to go up the race route, remove their skins at the top and ski down to the next transition station.

Then they will ascend again to the top of the resort to the final transition station and race their way down to the finish line.

“This is a great series of events. I have been watching many people training over the past few weeks, and I can’t wait to see my first race,” said Dave Smith, Powderhorn’s marketing manager. “The event is going to start at 8:30 a.m. and awards at 11:30 a.m., which is going to make for a very fast and fun event to see.”

Smith said the race category will attract “some of the top mountaineering racers in the world.”

The four racing categories are: male and female Race and male and female Rec. The Racers event is nine miles long and covers 4,246 feet of vertical gain. The Rec racers will cover 7.25 miles with 3,175 feet of vertical gain.

All racers are encouraged to preregister at

Day-of registration will occur from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. in the Cottonwood Room at the Main Lodge.
