Bangs Canyon area closed for roadwork

A popular recreational area off Little Park Road will be closed this week to allow the Bureau of Land Management to perform maintenance and repair.

The Bangs Canyon trail head, which is about five miles up Little Park Road, will be closed through Friday and could be closed longer, depending on weather conditions that could delay the project.

The BLM will resurface the road leading to the trail head and install culverts for water diversion, which will provide all-season access and improve safety.

The trail head is a key access point for Mica Mine Trail, the motorized portion of Tabeguache Trail, Rough Canyon, Billings Canyon and the Third Flats motorized trail system.

The Bangs Canyon Special Recreation Management Area consists of 57,000 acres of public land south of Grand Junction. It offers opportunities for mountain biking, motorcycle and off-road vehicle use, horseback riding, hiking, backpacking and big-game hunting.

Users of the area are advised to call the BLM at 244-3000 for current project information and road status.
