Mesa Mall Marketing Director Chelsi Reimer said Target is remodeling and expanding on many fronts, adding space for pantry products and baked goods, rearranging customer counters and giving Starbucks a face-lift.

In other mall news, keen observers noticed the departure of the Hallmark Store and Coach House Gifts. There was no note on the door explaining the store’s absence or indication of where it had moved. One customer told The Daily Sentinel he was frustrated because he relied on the store for Christmas gifts and lighting.

A call to the telephone number listed for Hallmark revealed it has been “disconnected, changed, or is no longer in service,” according to a pre-recorded message from Verizon. Curiously, the store’s website, hosted by Simon Properties, indicates the store is open for business.

Reimer confirmed the shop has been vacated and said a new, secret tenant is expected to take possession in November once a lease is negotiated.

■ Many people lucky enough to enjoy the entertainment, food, arts and crafts at the annual Ridgway Rendezvous last weekend made a smart choice to dine at Cimarron Café, 153 Highway 550, which completed its second year in business in July. 

Reasons for the restaurant’s continued success might be counted on one hand, starting with co-owner Cam Lawrence, her mother, Yvonne Jackson, and server Chasey Lichthardt; a compelling tomato bisque made fresh daily makes four; and crab cakes makes five — counted together, a five-star dining experience.

Glowing online reviews for the bistro confirmed the huge influence staff have on diners’ enjoyment of the place.

South of Montrose on U.S. Highway 550 in Ridgway, the restaurant is easy to find. It’s tucked beneath a big sign on the west side of the road just before the town’s only traffic light. This must-see is hard to miss.

■ Closer to home, another superior eatery celebrated 10 years in business this month with a special menu and the warm gratitude of loyal customers who consider the Red Rose Café, 235 Main St. in Palisade, among the best places to eat in the Grand Valley.

With lunch and dinner served off a mixed menu that includes traditional ethnic dishes from two diverse cultures, it’s easy to see why locals love the place so much and tourists can’t resist a visit during the high holidays: Colorado Mountain Winefest and the Palisade Peach Festival.

The restaurant is owned and operated by chef Tom Casabona and wife Hong “Rose” Casabona.

“We feature the cuisines of both our cultural heritages, from award-winning Vietnamese egg rolls and Vietnamese national dishes like pho and noodle bowls to Italian-American classics like lasagna and eggplant parmesan,” Tom Casabona said.

The eatery also serves seafood dishes such as Prince Edward Island mussels and Alaskan salmon, he said.

■ Now in its third month of business, Vivid Smoke Shop, 2454 U.S. Highway 6&50, was the brainchild of two brothers, both oil patch workers, who decided to invest their earnings in a local enterprise they believe has a promising future.

As for accessories for recreational smokers, products for these consumers are many. Vivid offers among the best quality and most affordable, co-owner Judah Devilbis said.

Although some local shops attempt to make sales by offering so many glass, metal and plastic options that it can seem overwhelming, Vivid has everything smokers need, but displayed in a “chill” atmosphere that encourages people to hang out, Devilbis said.

At Vivid Smoke Shop, the vibe is different. Wide open spaces and tasteful vertical, glass display cases show off products, but give room for shoppers to recline in comfortable lounge chairs and really explore the products that interest them.

“We’re trying to promote a positive lifestyle for the smoker-friendly community,” Devilbis said. “It’s all about community at our place.”
