Black Canyon offering several winter programs
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is offering guided programs and clinics for the winter season. Participants will meet at the South Rim Visitor Center for all events.
Cross Country Ski Clinics: Saturdays, Dec. 31 and Jan. 7 at 11 a.m. The two-hour clinic will cover the basics, like simple striding and gliding and traveling in variable terrain and snow conditions. Participants must have their own ski equipment. Reservations required.
Snowshoe Walks: Jan. 11 through March 4 on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays; 10 a.m. on Saturdays, and 1 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays. These are 1½-mile walks, so allow two hours for the program. Free snowshoes are available to use. Reservations required.
Full Moon Snowshoe Walks: Thursday, Jan. 12 and Friday, Feb. 10, at 5:30 p.m. Allow 90 minutes for the program and be prepared for cold weather. Free snowshoes are available. Hot drinks will also be available after the program. Reservations required.
Winter Night Skies: Feb. 25 and March 25 at 7 p.m.
Sky Rangers and the Black Canyon Astronomical Society will host the event to learn more about what is happening in the night sky. The event starts with a special program followed by night sky viewing. Poor weather could affect the program, so call 970-249-1914, ext. 423 to confirm.
The South Rim Visitor Center winter hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day (closed Christmas Day).
