BLM blocks roads in Dominguez area

Gates have been installed blocking vehicle access on two routes in the newly created Dominguez Canyon Wilderness, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

The BLM’s Grand Junction office said in a news release Tuesday the new gates are located on Long Mesa Road in the Wagon Park area and at the wilderness boundary in Cactus Park.

Hiking and horseback riding are allowed within the wilderness, the news release said, but motorized and mechanized vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles and mountain bikes, are not allowed in the designated wilderness area.

Congress in March designated the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area and the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness Area.

The BLM is planning the construction of a new trailhead in the Cactus Park area, roughly a mile from where the new gate was erected.

The trailhead, slated to be done next year, will include a new parking area and restrooms.
