City offices closed for Fourth observance

City of Grand Junction offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

There will be no city of Grand Junction trash collection on Thursday and it will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week. There will be no recycling collection on Thursday, instead it will be collected on Friday, July 5, along with Friday’s regular recycling route. Recycling collection for Friday, July 5 will be on regular schedule.

Thursday will also be a parking meter holiday. Visitors to the downtown area can park in metered spaces for free, including the parking garage on Rood Avenue.

National accreditation for MCC facility


MCC Drug and Alcohol Screening Inc. in Grand Junction has been officially recognized as Nationally Accredited for Administration of Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs by the Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry Association.

This accreditation means that their facility, operations and personnel meet the highest standards in areas such as regulatory compliance, client confidentiality, accountability, company service standards, operational practices, business ethics and professional competency for drug and alcohol testing program management.

Applicants sought for city boards


The city of Grand Junction is seeking applicants to serve on the Grand Junction Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals. 

The Planning Commission hears and decides certain planning and zoning related issues and makes recommendations to the City Council on similar matters. The Zoning Board of Appeals hears and decides appeals of administrative decisions, variances and exceptions to setback requirements. 

City residency is required for both boards. You may apply to serve on these or any other city volunteer board by sending a letter of interest accompanied by an application addressed to: Grand Junction City Council, c/o the City Clerk, 250 N. Fifth St. Application forms may be obtained at the City Clerk’s Office or downloaded from the City’s website at  Applications are due by Aug. 5.

Summer and fall music classes open


The Music Together “Summer Session 2” will be offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mondays, July 8 through Aug. 5 at the First United Methodist Church, 365 Main St., in Palisade.

Cost is $70 with additional siblings costing $35. 

A fall session is scheduled to begin in September and registration for the fall session also is open.

Take hobbies, talents to the fair


Mesa County residents are invited to display their passions and talents — fine art, photography, canning, gardening, baking and more — at the open class exhibit at the Mesa County Fair.

Open class entry forms, rules and guidelines are available at To participate, bring your entry to the Fairgrounds, 2785 U.S. Highway 50, at the designated time and date in the guidelines. Exhibits will be displayed, judged and ribbons awarded throughout the fair from July 16–20.

Volunteers are needed to set up exhibits before the fair, and during the fair volunteers are needed to assist with various booths and provide general help. For information about volunteering, call Janet Renzelman, Mesa County Fair coordinator, at 256-1528.
