Candidate wants to help hunters who are veterans

The Democratic candidate for House District 55 wants to extend hunting license benefits to veterans besides those with disabilities.

Dan Robinson said if voters send him to the Legislature in next month’s election, one of the bills he would introduce would offer preference points to all veterans 65 and older in getting a hunting licenses.

Colorado Parks & Wildlife offers that benefit to active duty military personnel and disabled veterans.

Robinson, a Grand Junction resident who is vying for the seat against incumbent GOP Rep. Ray Scott, said there’s no reason why all older veterans shouldn’t have the same benefit.

“We pay a lot of lip service to vets, but the truth is we don’t give them a great deal of reward,” Robinson said Tuesday. “This is a way to thank them in a way that’s very clear and specific.”

Hunters earn preference points every time they apply for a specific big-game license but don’t get one for such animals as deer, elk and pronghorn.

The state has long offered additional preference points to active duty military personnel and their families, and allowed them to obtain in-state licenses even if they just were stationed in the state.

The benefit also was extended to military personnel stationed elsewhere in the nation who kept Colorado as their home of record.

The state also offers free lifetime combo licenses for small game and fishing to veterans who have a 60 percent or higher disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
