City will move operations for parks workers

City of Grand Junction parks operations employees could move out of an aging Quonset hut in Lincoln Park as early as this fall, according to City Parks and Recreation Director Rob Schoeber.

About 45 forestry, horticulture, parks maintenance, golf and sports facilities employees all work in the Quonset hut east of the tennis courts in Lincoln Park, Schoeber said. Moving out of the building is a top priority in the city’s parks master plan, he said.

“I think we tried to squeeze more work out of that building than was ever intended,” Schoeber said. “It’s not a very aesthetically pleasing site.”

Instead of building a new parks shop, the city will move operations employees into the former Riverside Parkway office at 2529 High Country Court, which Schoeber said is vacant.

“Hopefully when things slow down in the parks world later this fall we’ll be able to move,” Schoeber said.

Parks and recreation administrative offices will remain in the brick building south of Lincoln Park-Moyer Swimming Pool, Schoeber said, but he is looking forward to freeing up more room in Lincoln Park once the Quonset hut is empty.

“It will be a safer environment for the general public,” he said.
