ROB STILLWELL AND DON LAUGHLIN finish the last half-mile of their 2.5-mile hike up and down Handies Peak in the San Juan Mountains south of Lake City. Handies, at 14,053 feet the 40th-highest of Colorado’s 54 Fourteeners, is a popular destination for climbers because it’s easy to reach by car and offers a fairly easy ascent to the top.
