Colorado Mesa wrestling team goes 2-1 at Grand Canyon Duals

Colorado Mesa dominated two teams, but were also dominated in a third wrestling dual.

The No. 14 Mavericks (6-1) were 2-1 in the Grand Canyon Duals on Saturday in Phoenix.

Mesa defeated Minot State (N.D.) University 45-3 and Simon Fraser (British Columbia) University 42-3, but lost to No. 4 St. Cloud State (Minn.) University 32-3.

“It was bittersweet,” CMU coach Chuck Pipher said. “It was crazy.

“All in all we wrestled well. This shows us where we are at. We still got some work to do.”

St. Cloud State won nine of the 10 matches, but the Huskies only had one pin. The rest were decisions.

No. 2-ranked Shamus O’Grady won a 3-2 decision over Nick Petersen in a matchup of All-Americans.

“Nick didn’t wrestle like he should have,” Pipher said. “He wrestled timid. We struggle with good teams. With the other two teams, we got after them. It’s a good lesson we learned.”

The Mavericks’ only win came from Drew Schumann.

The 141-pound sophomore defeated Jay Hildreth 9-8 and pinned his other two opponents.

“Drew is wrestling super tough with a lot of confidence,” Pipher said. “It paid off today. He’s getting better on his feet. He’s tough on top.”

Third-ranked Jon Gappmaier won his first match against Minot State’s Marcus Polak, 7-5 in overtime, but “tweaked” his knee Pipher said and didn’t wrestle the next two duals. Telbe Storbeck wrestled in Gappmaier’s place, going 1-1.

Chester Granard went 1-1. He was leading St. Cloud State’s Gabe Fogarty when Granard was pinned.

Pipher gave Tyler Miles an opportunity to wrestle in place of Granard against Simon Fraser. Miles won 7-5.

Jonathon Stelling (125), Tyler Nelson (133), Justin Schumacher (149), Nick Petersen (184) and Jordan Passehl (197) were 2-1.

The Mavericks return home to host California Baptist University at 7 p.m. Thursday at Brownson Arena, then wrestle in the Tracy Borah Duals on Saturday in Gunnison.
