Deputy stops vehicle, told man was shot

A man was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital on Saturday night after telling Mesa County sheriff’s deputies he’d shot himself.

According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Department, about 8 p.m. a sergeant stopped a vehicle driving north on 29 Road just north of Orchard Avenue for speeding. The driver jumped out of the vehicle and told the sergeant his passenger had been shot and he was taking his passenger to the hospital, said sheriff’s deputy Ben Carnes.

“The passenger told us himself that he’d shot himself,” Carnes said. “It appears to be a gunshot wound to the head.”

The passenger was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital, and when he left the scene “he was talking and breathing,” Carnes said. The driver stayed at the scene. Both men appeared to be in their 20s, Carnes said.

Saturday night, the Sheriff’s Department was investigating the incident as a possible crime “in case someone shot this guy and he was too afraid to say anything,” Carnes said.

The Grand Junction Police Department assisted Saturday night with traffic control, blocking 29 Road between Orchard Avenue and Dawn Drive.
