Fruita homes evacuated in gas line breach

Approximately 40 homes were under an evacuation order for several hours Monday morning in Fruita after a city contractor cut a gas line.

Residents in the 200 to 400 blocks of South Pine Street were ordered to evacuate around 10:30 a.m. They were allowed to return around noon, according to Kate Porras, a spokeswoman for the Grand Junction Police Department.

A contractor working on a road construction project at the intersection of East Carolina Avenue and South Pine inadvertently hit a 4-inch gas line, prompting the evacuations, Porras said. The Lower Valley Fire Protection District and Xcel Energy responded to the breach.

South Pine Street between Harrison and East Carolina remained closed for several hours Monday for additional repair work.

There were no reports of illness or injury associated with the breach, Porras said.
