Governor to consolidate Parks, DOW

Gov. John Hickenlooper announced plans today to consolidate the Division of Wildlife with the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation.

Hickenlooper and Mike King, executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources that oversees both agencies, said the move would take a couple of years to fully implement, but save the state in jobs and tax money.

The consolidation will include merging the Colorado State Parks Board with the Colorado Wildlife Commission.

The move also will mean the immediate suspension of plans to “re-purpose” four state parks, including three on the Western Slope, and cut back on the discounts seniors get in park passes.

The consolidated agency is to be called the Colorado Division of Parks, Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation, or CDPW.
