Grand Junction girls soccer team forges tie with Cortez

Jordan Drake’s goal with 15 minutes left in the game salvaged a 4-4 tie for Grand Junction against Montezuma-Cortez in Southwestern League girls soccer Friday at Cortez.

Leah Swander scored three goals for Grand Junction, which scored each of its goals in response to a Panther goal.

“They always scored first,” Tigers coach Joe Graham said. “We’d always score about four minutes after they’d score.”

Sam Melchor had two assists for the Tigers (1-2-1, 0-0-1 SWL), and it was Melchor’s corner kick that Drake headed in for the game’s final goal.

Fruita Monument 1, Durango 1: Megan Hale one-touched a crossing pass from Jennis Hart to score the lone goal for Fruita (0-1-3, 0-0-1 SWL) 15 minutes into the second half. Durango scored with 10 minutes left in the game to secure the tie.
