Grand Junction hiker reportedly dies in Utah

A Grand Junction man has died while hiking in Owl Canyon in San Juan County, Utah, according to a report in The Salt Lake Tribune.

The San Juan County, Utah, Sheriff’s Department was unable to confirm the death of John Slay to The Daily Sentinel on Sunday. But numerous posts on his Facebook page from friends appear to confirm Slay, 72, died May 9.

A call to a phone number for a man named John Slay in Grand Junction went to voicemail Sunday.

According to the Tribune account, a fellow hiker found Slay without water and complaining of stomach pain May 9. The hiker went to find help and left a note behind to alert other hikers to the situation. Four other hikers read the note and three of them stayed with Slay until medics arrived.

Slay was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Tribune, and his body was taken to Salt Lake City, where a state medical examiner will attempt to find what caused Slay’s death.

Slay was a University of Colorado graduate, had served in the U.S. Air Force and Army National Guard, and was retired from the U.S. Forest Service, according to his Facebook page.
