Group hosts
of broadband
 on W. Slope

Area residents will get a chance later this week to find out what’s happening when it comes to the future of the region’s broadband capability.

That’s when Club 20 will host a special event, Building Toward Broadband for Colorado Conference.

The daylong conference will feature experts in the telecom industry, federal and state regulators and state lawmakers discussing what’s going on within the industry and how it could impact the region.

Improving broadband services in rural areas has long been considered a major issue in economic development, particularly in rural and mountainous areas where getting faster Internet service is problematic.

The Colorado Public Utilities Commission is considering changing rules that could eliminate the $54 million in state subsidies in rural telephone and Internet services, much of which could impact rural services.

Conference attendees will hear from experts from CenturyLink, DISH Network Satellite, the PUC and the Federal Communications Commission.

The conference will end with a legislative panel that will include several Western Slope members of the Colorado Legislature, which may consider bills related to this issue when they convene in January. The
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. event will be held Thursday at the Ute Water Conservancy District Office conference room, 2190 H 1/4 Road.
