Highline Lake State Park switches its opportunities with the calendar

Winter means you’ll see more waterfowl and fewer people at Highline Lake State Park, as in this photo from last winter. The lake closed Monday to boating, allowing migrating waterfowl a quiet rest spot, one that lasts well after the lake freezes.

Recreation takes a seasonal turn this week at Highline Lake State Park with the Oct. 1 closure of the lake to boating.

During the fall and winter, the lake becomes a refuge for migrating and over-wintering waterfowl and sees an influx of hunters, wildlife watchers and hikers and bikers taking advantage of the park’s hard-packed hike and bike trail.

Waterfowl hunters are restricted to using one of the seven designated blinds on the north end of the lake. Jump-shooting waterfowl is not allowed.

The blinds are available by reservation by calling 255-6161. Reservations are not accepted more than 14 days in advance of the hunt date, and not after noon the day before the hunt.

Unreserved blinds will be available on a first-come, first-served basis only.

Hunting is allowed at Highline Lake on Monday through Friday only, 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset, during the hunting seasons.

The lake is expected to open as soon as ice conditions allow in the spring.

Other information about waterfowl hunting and current regulations are available in the 2012 Colorado Waterfowl brochure, which may be found at the Highline Lake visitor center.

The brochure also is available online at wildlife.state.co.us and at the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Northwest Region Office in Grand Junction.

The visitor center at Highline Lake also sells the required hunting licenses and stamps.
