Seventh-graders at Fruita Middle School respectfully agree to disagree on the price of gas and on illegal immigration.
Keep gas price throttled back
• Although the price of gas used to be high, it has now dropped to a reasonable price. For example, people used to have to pay more and more money each time they filled their cars up with gas. Some families couldn’t afford food, let alone buy gas for their vehicles. One of the reasons that I, as a kid, was not allowed to go to town was because gas was too expensive. I think the price should stay low. If it stays low, families save more money that can be used for other things, such as food, clothes or even vacations. Clearly, it would be wise to keep the price of gas low.

Rev gas price back up
• When gas prices are low, oil rigs have a hard time keeping jobs safe. They also have difficulty or no way at all to make money, so they close rigs and have to lay people off. Lowering gas prices is one of the worst things that can happen for oil rigs and their workers. As soon as we get rid of oil rigs like we’re doing now, our valley will struggle to keep going. Our valley will go downhill without natural gas. This is the worst economy to be losing jobs right now. All the people losing jobs will not be able to pay for their houses, which will result in losing their houses. Or, they will not be able to provide food for their families, which will result in starvation.
If we want another Great Depression, then keep the economy going as badly as it. If not, then if we work together, we can get our gas prices up, not down. We can save many jobs. We need to stop losing jobs at this rate. We are getting close to the same situation as we were in the 1930s. All in all, oil rigs are closing down because of lack of work and not enough money to drill and pay workers. Let’s work together as one county, state and nation to get gas prices up and have work for our people.

Try to understand needs of illegal immigrants
• Have you ever felt bad about seeing someone treated differently? This is why I hate the way that some people act about illegal immigrants. First of all, Mexicans come to work and make money to give to their families over in Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico and other Latino places. More than half of Mexicans come to the U.S. to get money to give to their families in Latino places to have something to eat. How would you feel if you had nothing to eat and were poor? How would you try to make money to have something to eat? Second, Mexicans come to the U.S. to have a fun and relaxing life and for good health care. Mexicans have the right to get food, have a good time in their lives and make some money. Truly, I think people should treat one another like they want to be treated and not like animals.

Illegal immigration must cease
• Because of the world we live in, illegal immigration is an issue. To start, illegal immigrants cross over the borders any time they want. They could commit crimes and not even get into trouble because they don’t live here. They just get sent back to their home country. I think we need to stop them from crossing over to America. We need to build a huge wall around us and then arm it with U.S. soldiers. In summary, illegal immigration needs to be stopped.
