Hoop teams make quick preparations for playoffs

Only two days after receiving a bid into the Class 5A state playoffs, the Fruita Monument High School girls basketball team travels to Castle Rock today to face Castle View in the first round.

Fruita Monument coach Michael Wells said through his experience recruiting as an assistant at Colorado Mesa, two common opponents and some business connections, he was able to gather some film and scouting material on Castle View.

It’s a quick study session, because tipoff is at 7 tonight.

In Class 4A, both Palisade teams are hosting first-round games this week.

The sixth-seeded Bulldog girls host No. 11 Niwot at 6 tonight. On Wednesday, the No. 7 Bulldogs boys host No. 10 Evergreen, also at 6 p.m. Both games are at Palisade High School.

Rounding out the Class 4A boys field, with all opening-round games on Wednesday, Montrose travels to Colorado Springs to face Lewis-Palmer at 7 p.m.

Delta, seeded 11th, plays at sixth-seeded Pueblo Central at 7 p.m., and fifth-seeded Rifle hosts No. 12 Kennedy at 7 p.m.

All first-round Class 4A girls playoff games are tonight.

No. 6 Montrose hosts No. 11 Denver South at 7 p.m., No. 10 Delta travels to No. 7 Cañon City at 6 p.m. and No. 9 Rifle plays at No. 10 Sierra in Colorado Springs.

Both the Grand Junction boys and girls basketball teams received first-round byes. The fourth-seeded boys await the winner of No. 5 Cherokee Trail and No. 12 Rampart for the second on Saturday.

The No. 3 girls play Friday against either No. 6 Monarch or No. 11 Westminster. Once the Tigers’ opponents are determined, game times will be set by the school athletic directors.
