Ice on Rifle Gap Reservoir means it’s time for fishing tournament

As soon as ice forms on Rifle Gap Reservoir, anglers are eager to take advantage of the access. Several hundred ice-fishing enthusiasts are expected for the 17th annual Mountain Air Mechanical Rifle Gap Ice Fishing Tournament on Jan. 17 and 18.



The 17th annual Mountain Air Mechanical Rifle Gap Ice Fishing Tournament, cosponsored with the Rifle Chamber of Commerce and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, is set for Jan. 17-18.

The competition runs at 8 a.m. until 
3 p.m. on Jan. 17 and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on 
Jan. 18. The awards ceremony will take place after Sunday’s competition closes.

Prizes will be awarded for largest rainbow trout, brown trout and yellow perch.

Anglers 18 years and older can win cash prizes up to $500 for the top five lengths for each species. The angler catching the largest of the three species is automatically entered into a raffle for a chance to win $20,000.

Youths 17 years and younger can win noncash prizes.

The entry fee is $35 for adults before Jan. 14, $50 after. Entry is free for anglers 17 and under.

Entries are limited to 400 adult participants. There is no limit on youth anglers.

All vehicles entering the park must have a valid daily or annual parks pass.
