Showy shoes to kick off library art show

Teens decorated shoes as part of the “Custom Kicks” art project at the Orchard Mesa Branch Library Wednesday afternoon.

Shanna Smith, teen librarian for the Mesa County Library, dumped a bag of used shoes on the floor of the Orchard Mesa Branch Library Wednesday afternoon. Dress boots, Mary Jane’s, Converse, and high heels spilled to the floor.

Teens were given fabric and acrylic paint, beads, pom-poms and multi-colored feathers — and an assignment: “Turn these old shoes into custom art pieces.”

“Custom Kicks” is art program taking place at all the branch locations during the month of March. The idea was inspired by the book with the same title by Maki. The book features full-color pictures of shoes that have been painted, pizzazzed and turned into wearable art.

The project is a kickoff to the library’s Teen Art Show, on display at the main branch in April.

Smith plans to display the shoes by hanging them from the ceiling. All types of media will be accepted into the show including watercolor, acrylic, multimedia and “anything else teens come up with,” Smith said. The show is book-themed, so the art piece must have been inspired by some kind of book within the library. She expects a significant number of entries to be in the graphic arts due to the popularity of graphic novels among teen girls.

The winner of the art show will receive a $50 gift certificate to craft store Michael’s.

The idea for the book-inspired art show came from the library’s Teen Advisory Board. The board is a group of teens that work regularly with Smith to make sure the library remains in-touch with the needs of teenagers. They keep Smith in-the-know about popular teen culture, books and event suggestions.

The library offers monthly events for teens including book clubs, movies, art projects, gaming and Rockband tournaments.

The “Custom Kicks” project will continue this month at the branch library locations. A complete list of upcoming events is available at
