Library offers classes in May to help jobless

As the unemployment rate in Mesa County began to climb last year, so did the number of people taking advantage of computer-skills classes and free Internet at the Mesa County Central Library.

More people wanted to learn how to submit resumes and apply for jobs online, use library databases to research companies with job openings, and check out books and audio books offering guidance on getting a job. Shawna Bird, adult services librarian, took note of the changes and decided the library should host a series of job-skills classes in May.

“We’ve been trying to tune in more to what the community needs,” Bird said. “We’ll see what comes out of this that seems to be the most useful and popular and try to keep it going.”

The classes include writing resumes and cover letters,  interview skills and learning what the library has to offer job-seekers. Classes will be taught by library resource workers as well as representatives of local businesses and members of the Western Colorado Human Resource Association.

Each class is free, but people are asked to register at the library or on the library’s website because seating is limited. Classes will take place at the Mesa County Central Library on the corner of Grand Avenue and Fifth Street and will be offered during the evening or midday.

A full list of classes taking place May 3 to May 24 is available at in the events calendar, located under the “Events” tab on the site’s home page.
