Local birders ready for big weekend in Ouray County

This weekend is the annual Ouray County bird count, a two-day affair that includes a visit Sunday to the banding station at Ridgway Reservoir.

Birders will meet at 7:30 a.m. at Ridgway State Park before carpooling to birding sites around the county.

Sites to be visited include along the Uncompahgre River and up Red Mountain Pass.

The banding station operated by the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory is open to the public Sunday morning only.

Freelance birding also is encouraged, and county bird lists will be available at the meeting site.

WHAT: Ouray County bird count.

WHEN: Saturday and Sunday, starting at
7:30 a.m.

WHERE: Meet each morning at Ridgway State Park (a parks pass is required on each vehicle).

BRING: Water, food (lunch and snacks), hat, sunscreen, binoculars, spotting scopes, guide books, sense of adventure.
