Man accused of threatening ‘war’

A judge on Sunday ordered a $150,000 bond for a convicted felon from Grand Junction who was arrested after he allegedly pointed a rifle at several people and threatened to give police “a war” during an ensuing two-hour standoff.

Lonnie Ivey, 46, 2877 C 1/2 Road, was advised he could be charged with menacing with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, prohibited use of a weapon, reckless endangerment and failing to obey a lawful order.

Mesa County sheriff’s deputies were called to Ivey’s house just before 9 p.m Saturday. An 18-year-old man who had been at the house told deputies Ivey had been drinking all day and hitting his wife, Tamara, and that Tamara called him and asked him to come pick her up, according to an arrest affidavit.

When the man showed up to pick her up and collect some of her belongings, Lonnie Ivey came out of the house with a rifle, pointed it at him and told him to get off his property. Two other teenagers that accompanied the 18-year-old said Ivey pointed the gun at them, as well, the affidavit said.

While deputies were interviewing Tamara Ivey, Lonnie Ivey called her cell phone and told deputies to back off and that “if they want a war, I will give them a war,” the affidavit said.

The Sheriff’s Department’s SWAT team responded to the Iveys’ house, set up a perimeter and ordered Ivey to come out. After he failed to comply, deputies evacuated houses immediately surrounding the
Iveys’ and used reverse 911 calls to alert residents within one block in all directions to stay inside and lock their doors and windows.

Deputies found Ivey hiding in an irrigation ditch on his property just before 11 p.m. and arrested him. They found two rifles inside the house, according to the affidavit.

Ivey told deputies he grabbed a bat and a rifle but denied pointing the rifle at anyone, the affidavit said.

Authorities said Ivey pleaded guilty in 1998 to menacing with a deadly weapon.
