Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials marks 25th years with Sept. 7 start
The top 135 international dog/handler teams will be making their way to Colorado this week for the 25th annual Meeker Classic Sheepdog Championship Trials.
Teams will compete for a $25,000 purse Wednesday through Sunday, Sept. 7–11, in Meeker.
During competition the dogs and handlers work together to move sheep in various patterns in a pasture. In the preliminary runs, the teams manage five yearling ewes “and it gets even trickier at the semi-finals and finals as the dogs manage more sheep with more difficult requirements,” according to a news release.
The trials include a daily festival with seminars, sheep sheering contests, pancake breakfasts, barbecues and a free Chuck Pyle concert on Saturday, Sept. 10.
There will be a food fair, vendors, pottery, spinning and other demonstrations, bagpiper, sheep camps, service and therapy dogs, a border collie rescue and much more.
An art contest/auction and art social are set for Thursday night, Sept. 8.
Daily admission is $10 for adults or $30 for a five-day pass. Tickets for adults 65 years and older and children ages 8–16 are $5 per day, or $15 for a five-day pass. Children younger than 8 are free.
