Mesa freshman Prater loses playoff in New Mexico

Colorado Mesa freshman Colin Prater tied for first place, but he lost in a playoff for the medalist honor Tuesday in the Western New Mexico Intercollegiate Invitational at the Golf Club at Estrella in Phoenix.

The Mavericks took 12th place out of 20 teams with a three-round score of 890. Oklahoma Christian won the team title with 851. Western New Mexico took second with 856, and Colorado Christian was third with 862.

Sam Johnston of Oklahoma Christian won the playoff. He finished six shots ahead of Prater in the final round to force the playoff. They had a three-round score of 209.

Prater had a final-round score of 74 after leading the tournament with a two-round score of 9-under-par 135.

Colorado Mesa’s Sean Robbins tied for 33rd with 221, Adam Griffith scored 231, Christopher Aiken shot 232 and Trenton Schwehr scored 234.
