Montrose County manager to resign

Montrose County Manager Rick Eckert will resign next month, a little more than a year after taking the job as the county’s top employee.

County officials announced Eckert’s departure in a news release Wednesday afternoon. The release did not give a reason for his resignation.

Eckert became the county manager in January last year. His last day on the job will be May 16.

“I have enjoyed working with the best employees of my entire career in city and county government,” Eckert said in a prepared statement. “In my opinion, they are Montrose County’s greatest asset. I will miss working with them but I know the county will be in good hands with the professional service and attitudes these employees demonstrate.”

The news release said Eckert and his wife, Jan, are grateful to the community for welcoming them. It says Eckert has not announced his future plans.

County officials said they will launch a search for a new county manager as soon as possible. They didn’t indicate how Eckert’s duties will be handled in the interim.

Eckert’s resignation comes at a contentious time for the Montrose County Commission, as county leaders are considering adding a second fixed-base operator at Montrose Regional Airport, Florida-based Majestic Skies LLC. The issue has caused friction at a number of recent public meetings of the commission.

Commissioners have cited federal obligations as the reason for starting up the process of adding a second fixed-based operator at the airport, which receives millions in federal grant funding for operations.
