Montrose dominates SWL volleyball team

Winning the Southwestern League title and reaching the state tournament earned the Montrose High School volleyball team numerous postseason awards as the SWL’s 2008 all-league team was announced Tuesday.

Ana Finley, a senior, was selected as the league’s player of the year as a libero. It was Finley’s first time being selected to the all-league team.

Joining Finley was another first-time all-league selection, teammate Kelsi Dardis, a junior outside hitter.

The two helped the Indians (19-10) win the SWL title outright, then advance through district and regional tournament play.

In its opening Class 4A state tournament match, Montrose knocked off the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Cheyenne Mountain, but lost its other two pool-play matches and did not advance to the state semifinals.

Central, which finished second in the SWL standings and qualified for the 5A district playoffs, had two first-team selections. Juniors Amy Kame and Haleigh Higgins earned their first selections on the top squad. Both were second-team selections last year.

Kame was a middle hitter. Higgins began the season as an outside hitter but was moved to setter toward the end of the season.

Durango also had two selections on the first team, senior setter Katerina Garcia and senior outside hitter Kelley Dodds.

Rounding out the first team was Fruita Monument senior setter Lindsey Henke and Montezuma-Cortez senior outside hitter Tori Pickens.

There were no repeat first-team selections from last season. As with Kame and Higgins, Henke and
Pickens were second-team all-league selections last season.

Shane Forrest of Montrose was selected by her peers as the league’s coach of the year.
