Montrose dog park could open this fall

MONTROSE — Detailed sketch plans for a dog-friendly park in Montrose should be presented to the city’s parks department toward the end of this month.

The new park would be on 1.25 acres next to Baldridge Park on the banks of the Uncompahgre River. Plans include dog-agility structures, waste stations and access for people with disabilities.

Friends In Dog Ownership chairwoman Amy Ondos said the park could be a great way for dog owners to exercise their pets, help keep other city parks cleaner and attract visitors to the area.

“Dogs that are able to be socialized and exercised are generally better dogs,” Ondos said.

Ondos said Friends In Dog Ownership (FIDO) has been working on this project for four years. If the plans are approved, the park could be a reality sometime this fall.

Last year, the park was accepted and approved by the Montrose City Council and the Parks Advisory Council.

“All we’re waiting on is a detailed development plan from FIDO,” Montrose City Park Planner Dennis Erickson said.

Ondos said the park could be advertised on the city’s website to attract people who are traveling through the area.

“I know when I travel, I look for a dog park,” Ondos said.

Ondos said the park could help dog owners handle their pets better and reduce noise complaints in the city because dogs are properly exercised.

The dog ownership group’s next meeting is 7 p.m. Wednesday at the R&R Sports Bar, 35 N. Uncompahgre Ave.
