Murder probe takes GJ police to California

Investigators trying to learn the motive for the Oct. 11 killings of two Grand Junction residents have traveled to California, where the killer, Stefan Alexander Martin-Urban, lived for a time.

The Grand Junction Police Department, however, has no immediate plans to send investigators to Alaska, where Martin-Urban grew up, spokeswoman Kate Porras said.

“That could change if there are new leads,” Porras said. In the meantime, “We’re focusing on the local investigation.”
Martin-Urban killed himself after he shot to death Grand Junction dentist Terry Fine in front of Fine’s home, then opened fire on Fine’s wife, Linda, and Flo Gallagher, who were seated in the back of a car driven by
Mike Gallagher, a former president of Mesa State College.

Flo Gallagher died at the scene.

Linda Fine survived after being struck by several bullets.

Grand Junction police said Martin-Urban fired five times at Mike Gallagher as he sped from the scene in his silver BMW to St. Mary’s Hospital.

The Fines and Gallaghers had planned to drive to Las Vegas that day and the Gallaghers were picking up the Fines at their home on Chestnut Drive in north Grand Junction.

Mike Gallagher told police that he noticed a dark green Honda CRV turning around in his driveway as he left home and that he believed the CRV had followed him to the Fine home.

Martin-Urban grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska, and had lived for a time in Utah and California before moving to Lakewood, where he lived with an aunt and obtained a Colorado driver’s license.

Receipts found in his SUV showed he bought gas in Cameo and ate a meal in Green River, Utah, the night before the attack.

Police still are seeking information about Martin-Urban, and anyone who might have seen him or his dark green Honda CRV is asked to call the special tip line for the case at 244-3755.
