OUT: Fly-fishing whiz kid in town
George Bernard Shaw once said, “Youth is a wonderful thing. What a crime to waste it on children.”
It’s clear he never met Tyler Befus of Montrose.
Tyler, at the venerable age of 11, certainly isn’t wasting his youth. He’s an accomplished artist, fly tier and fly-fishing instructor, has a youth fly-fishing instructional DVD in process and recently released his second book, this one titled “A Kids Guide to Fly Tying.”
In addition, Tyler holds International Game Fish Association Junior World Records for sheefish and kokanee salmon.
He also does the regular young-guy-growing-up activities such as competing on the Montrose Marlin swim team and enjoying soccer, hockey and football, piano, theater and photography.
He and his dad, renowned fly-tier and designer Brad Befus of Ross Reels, will be at Western Anglers Fly Shop, 413 Main, from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday while Tyler signs copies of his book and demonstrate some of his favorite fly patterns and how to fish them.
Did I mention Tyler is the youngest member of the Ross Reels, Rio Products Inc., Oakley, Simms Fishing Products, and Whiting Farms pro staff teams?
The Saturday demonstration is free. Whether you’re young or young at heart, it will be enjoyable.
