Grand Junction cruises past Montrose

Broderick Robinson scored 20 points Friday night to lead Grand Junction to a 72-52 Southwestern League victory over Montrose.

The Tigers (16-2, 6-0 SWL) led 22-12 after the first quarter and 42-19 at the half.

“In the second quarter we held them to seven points and really were able to get out in transition,” Grand Junction coach Dutch Johnson said. “I didn’t think we were as good defensively as we’ve been, but it was as good of a team effort as we’ve had all year. Everyone contributed.”

Trenton Soriano made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for the Tigers, and Ridge Droskin and D.J. Wells scored 10 points apiece.

Ross Barney led Montrose (6-10, 1-6 SWL) with 10 points, but Johnson said Wells did a good job of limiting his output. Meanwhile, the Indians’ Kyle Freeburg was limited to one point, and Johnson lauded Stockton Rock for his defense on Freeburg.

“Two games in a row Stockton’s done a great job on Freeburg,” Johnson said. “You can’t give (Freeburg) any space, and Stockton didn’t.”

Steamboat Springs 61, Palisade 54: Zach Dunklin made seven 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 27 points, 21 above his average, as Steamboat Springs won the Class 4A Western Slope League contest.

Palisade assistant coach Greg Tafel said it didn’t matter what the Bulldogs did, Dunklin hoisted up shots and made them, even when they were contested.

“I give him all the props in the world,” Tafel said. “He was just unconscious. He had a night he’ll never forget.”

Jacob Bollinger led the Bulldogs (11-6, 8-3 WSL) with 16 points, and Zach Marengo scored 12 points, and Skyler Miller added 11.

Durango 61, Fruita Monument 56: Durango (9-5, 5-1 SWL) pulled away in the fourth quarter behind Dane Mestas’ 14 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, to pick up a Southwestern League win.

Dylan Row came up big for Fruita Monument (8-12, 4-3 SWL) with 21 points. His steal and three-point play cut the lead to 59-56, but the Demons held on with free throws down the stretch.

Row scored 10 points in the first half, but the Demons took a 27-24 lead at the half. The Wildcats went on a 6-0 run to take the lead in the third, but Durango regrouped and took a 43-41 lead going into the fourth.

Girls Basketball

Cruz Maestas scored 11 points and Jenna Brown added eight points to lead Palisade to a 39-34 Class 4A Western Slope League win.

Palisade (11-6, 8-3 WSL) trailed 26-20 after three quarters but rallied with a 19-point fourth quarter behind six points from Brown to avenge a loss to Steamboat (7-8, 2-7 WSL) earlier this season.

Glenwood Springs 56, Delta 31: The Demons used a big second half, outscoring the Panthers 33-12 to pick up a Western Slope League win and remain undefeated at 16-0.

Rifle 52, Summit 32: Chante Church made all 13 of her free throws and scored 21 points to lead the Bears (8-7, 8-3 WSL) to a 4A WSL victory. Summit dropped to 4-11, 1-10.

Grand Valley 52, Olathe 36: The Cardinals took a 17-5 lead after the first quarter and used a big third quarter to beat the Pirates in a key Class 3A Western Slope League game.

The win keeps Grand Valley (11-3, 10-1 WSL) at the top of the league standings. Olathe dropped to 12-4, 9-4 WSL.

Wrestling

Delta came away with a 50-20 win over Palisade in a 4A Western Slope League wrestling dual Friday.

Delta won 10 matches, including all of the matches from 170 pounds and up. Kory Mills won at 170, Cordell Stroud at 182, Livan Santander at 195, Alejandro Medina at 220 and Marcus Garcia at heavyweight.

Palisade’s returning state champ Dalton Hannigan won by technical fall at 138, and Trevor Garcia (145) and Randen Espinoza (106) picked up pins for the Bulldogs.
