R-5 bike sale set for Saturday

Teariny Grimes, 17, checks the tire pressure in a bike she helped improve as part of the bike maintenance class at R-5 High School.

The thing with bikes is that everybody has one but not many really ride them.

That’s what Mitch Hamilton learned when he ran an ad in the Daily Sentinel’s classifieds requesting used bikes for a bicycle maintenance class he wanted to start at R-5 High School.

“Apparently you can have a whole yard of bikes if you want them,” Hamilton said.

After just two weeks, Hamilton had more than 80 bikes donated to the class. Some were perfectly functional while others looked as though they had been stored in someone’s garage for a really long time.

The students in the extracurricular class disassembled the bikes, saving good parts and disregarding the rest to sell as scrap metal to fund needed parts such as tubes and tires. The class not only gave the students a valuable mechanical skill but also counts toward their required service learning credits needed for graduation.

“These kids have transportation issues and they have a responsibility to get themselves to school,” Hamilton said. “I’d like want to see every kid riding a bike to school.”

The students restored 30 bikes which will be for sale to the public from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parking lot of the school, 310 N. Seventh St. Prices will range from $50 to $100, less for toddler-sized bikes.

Hamilton, a math teacher, said he hopes to make the class a part of the school’s math and science curriculum next year. “It gives students a hands-on venue to learn math and science concepts,” Hamilton said.

He added that he will begin taking donations of used bikes again in the fall.
