Mavs top CSU-Pueblo in dual

Mesa State won the last six matches, including one in the final seconds, to defeat CSU-Pueblo 25-12 in an RMAC dual Wednesday night in Pueblo.

Jon Gappmaier started the run for the Mavericks with a 10-1 major decision over former three-time Colorado state champion Matt Addington at 157 pounds. Dylan Granard followed with a 7-2 victory over NCAA Division II national qualifier Justin Grant at 165 pounds and Kyle Brightman scored a takedown in the final seconds to defeat Adam Carey 3-1 in the 184-pound match.

Tyler Nelson had Mesa’s only pinfall of the night at 133 pounds. Zak Slotten (174), Shane Miller (197) and Trevor Stapp (285) won for the Mavericks as well.

Mesa wrestles at 7 p.m. today at No. 18 Adams State.

Prep Basketball

Defense helps GJ top Uintah, Utah

Grand Junction buckled down on defense and hit nine 3-pointers to defeat Uintah (Utah) 70-49 on Wednesday night in Vernal, Utah.

Nate Yanez led the Tigers (8-5) with 17 points. He hit five 3-pointers. Tyler Winder had 16 points, including four 3-pointers.

Grand Junction broke open an eight-point game at halftime, outscoring the Utes 37-24 in the second half.

Tyler Johnson led Uintah with 15 points.

Club Volleyball

Two Western Colorado teams play well in Phoenix tournament

Two Western Colorado Volleyball Club teams participated in the Fiesta Volleyball Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., last weekend.

The Western Colorado 16’s team took 33rd place out of 78 teams. The 18’s team took 16th place out of 64 teams in the 18’s club division.

Ice & Rock Climbing

Women’s clinic will be Jan. 30

Chicks with Picks, a provider of women’s ice and rock climbing clinics, is holding its annual auction and slide show at 7 p.m. on Jan. 31 at the Ouray Community Center.

There is a $5 entrance fee, which includes a seat at this year’s slide show by Girly Guide Danika Gilbert.

A portion of the money raised will be donated to Hilltop’s Tri-County Resources, a program for individuals affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.
