Grand Valley Cyclo-Cross Series begins Saturday at 10 a.m. is hosting a Grand Valley Cyclo-Cross Series beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Redlands Middle School, 2200 Broadway.

Cyclo-Cross courses consist of several laps of a short, 1/4- to 1-mile course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring cyclists to quickly dismount and carry their bike while navigating obstacles. This year’s series will include a ‘Donut’ short-cut on the course requiring all cyclists taking the short-cut to eat a donut.

The series has Category A (road, pro to category 3 and mountain, pro to category 2) and Category B (all other cyclists). The top male and female in each category will receive an award.

GJ’s Whiteley wins in Las Vegas

Jim Whiteley of Grand Junction took first place Sunday in the 10th annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals.

Whiteley’s top alcohol dragster ran 5.347 seconds at 263.31 mph in the final. His reaction time was 0.026.

Monroe Guest jumped the starting light by 0.001 of a second.

It was Whiteley’s first win of the season in the Full Throttle Series, but he is 9-1 in career final rounds. He finished fourth in the season points standings.


Fruita’s Smith makes PRCA Finals

Tyler Smith qualified for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Dec. 2-11 in Las Vegas.

The Fruita bull rider finished the season in fourth place in the world standings. He made the 2007 Professional Bull Riders, Inc. Finals.

Smith, 23, is a 2005 Fruita Monument High School graduate.
