Station to use part of its land for home site
KREX-TV plans to convert part of its land on Hillcrest Drive into a single-family residential plot, the station’s general manager confirmed Tuesday.
Ron Tillery, general manager for the station, said the hill abutting Hillcrest Drive and about two-thirds of an acre, owned by Hoak Media of Colorado, will be severed from the site of the station’s new building.
“Hopefully someone can build a nice house there,” he said.
Tillery said the station can split off the land because the new TV station will be set back from the road and will be much smaller than the previous building.
Tillery said the new building, which will look like a stucco house, will be about 9,400 square feet — 3,000 fewer than the old station building, which burned down in a catastrophic fire in January.
“We’re really excited about being in a new place,” he said.
Tillery said KREX-TV, which has based its news operation out of Western Colorado Community College since the fire, should move back to its home on Hillcrest Drive by mid-summer.
