Stavrakis wins three events in Maverick Duals

Mesa State’s Kent Stavrakis won three individual events Saturday in the Bill and Peggy Foster Maverick Duals at El Pomar Natatorium.

Stavrakis won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.01 seconds, with teammate Justin White right behind in second place in 22.37 seconds. They went 1-2 in the 100 free, with Stavrakis winning in 47.94 seconds and White second in 49.82. Jakob Matthiessen, who won the 200 free, was third in the 100 (50.05). Matthiessen touched the wall in 1 minute, 51.17 seconds in the 200.

Stavrakis wrapped up his big day with a win in the 100 butterfly in 52.73 seconds. Dan MacDonald was second in 55.15.

The Mavericks’ men’s team defeated the University of Colorado’s club team 2216-72 and tied Colorado School of Mines 147-147.

Alejandro Hernandez won the men’s 200 yard butterfly in 1:59.48, with Shawn Grace third (2:05.68), MacDonald fourth (2:05.96) and Jordan Heggen fifth (2:06.74).

Brock Martin continued to dominate the diving competition, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter titles. Martin scored 288.65 points in the 1-meter competition, with teammate Liam Acosta third with 173.25 points. Martin scored 302.30 points to win the 3-meter title, with Acosta again third with 224.95 points.

The Mesa women’s team defeated CU 210-39 and edged Mines 174-118, but lost to Northern Colorado 226-62 and the University of New Mexico 235-27.

The Mavericks didn’t win any individual events. Jaclyn McMillen finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.47, Kelly Hogan was fourth in the 200 free (2:00.22) and Briana Purkapile was sixth in the 100 free (56.05).

New Mexico won eight of the 14 women’s swimming events, with Northern Colorado winning the other six, plus both diving titles. Not surprisingly, the closest dual was between those two teams, with the Lobos beating UNC 167-121.
