Teen dies of injuries after crash

Services are today in Glenwood Springs for 19-year-old Glenwood man Jonathan Aguirre, who died Monday from injuries suffered in a Nov. 24 car crash in which five other teens were injured.

Aguirre was wearing a seat belt during the single-car crash that occurred west of Rifle on Interstate 70, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Mass is at noon at Farnum Holt Funeral Home in Glenwood Springs.

Juan Morena-Zavala, 17, was driving a 1998 Nissan Sentra westbound when he lost control of the vehicle, which went through a deer fence, became airborne, hit an embankment and rolled. Morena-Zavala, Aguirre, Ivan Morena-Zavala, 18, and Valaria Castillo, 16, were taken by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital after the accident.

Aguirre was in critical condition at St. Mary’s Hospital before dying.

Ivan Morena-Zavala’s condition was upgraded the day after the accident from fair to good. He was not listed at St. Mary’s Hospital on Wednesday.

Castillo’s condition Wednesday had been upgraded from critical to serious, and Juan Morena-Zavala’s condition has been upgraded from critical to good.

Two other passengers, Mavel Rodriguez, 15, and Jenny Lisseth-Medin, 16, sustained minor injuries and were treated at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, the State Patrol said.

The State Patrol said speed may have been a factor in the crash.
