Thursday gathering hooks women fly-fishers

Fly fishing knows no season, as author Shelley Walchak demonstrates during a trip to the Taylor River north of Gunnison. Women interested in learning to fly fish — winter or summer — are invited to attend Thursday’s “Fly Fishing Women’s Night Out” at Western Anglers, 413 Main St.

It’s estimated, according to the SheLovesFlyFishing.com website, that of the 18.2 million anglers in the U.S. considering themselves fly fishers, 35 percent of them, or roughly 6.4 million, are women.

If you spend any time on the stream, that number won’t surprise you, although it’s certainly grown in the past two decades.

It’s because of that growth that groups such as Casting For Recovery, a fly-fishing-based support program for breast-cancer survivors, is possible.

It’s also possible many more women are interested in fly fishing but don’t know how to get started.

That’s where Thursday’s “Fly Fishing Women’s Night Out” at Western Anglers comes in.

It’s a free, informative and women-friendly gathering of like-minded female fly fishers and those who want to be.
