Valley under severe storm watch
The Grand Valley and much of western Colorado is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 tonight, capping a day of unusually severe weather for eastern Utah and western Colorado.
The National Weather Service in Grand Junction says showers and thunderstorms are likely late this afternoon and evening, with some storms capable of producing heavy rain, large hail and damaging winds. Tonight’s low should drop to 50 degrees.
Much of southeastern Utah, including Moab, has been under a tornado watch most of the afternoon. A tornado warning was in effect for areas north of Green River late this afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Weather Service indicated a tornado may have touched down in the Lake Powell area, according to The Associated Press.
Such severe weather typically occurs in late spring or early summer in the Grand Valley, not in October.
There’s a chance for rain in Grand Junction through Friday before things dry out Saturday and Sunday. Highs are expected to be in the upper-60s or low-70s for the remainder of the week.
