Whistler Blackcomb tops Ski readers’ poll
If there is one bragging right every major ski resort wants to claim, it’s being rated No. 1 in the annual Ski Magazine Reader’s Poll.
This year’s online poll offered 50 North American ski resorts for judging and drew an estimated 41,000 rankings in a wide range of categories.
It’s something resorts take quite seriously and it’s no surprise to industry watchers that this year perennial contender Whistler Blackcomb received the No. 1 overall ranking.
Located in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia 78 miles from Vancouver, B.C., Whistler Blackcomb is a two-mountain resort, with the side-by-side peaks Whistler and Blackcomb.
Along with being selected No. 1 overall, in variety of terrain, off-hill activities, and après, Whistler Blackcomb also scored highly in a number of other categories, including No. 2 in the lifts, lodging, and dining categories.
The resort offers more than 200 marked runs with skiing and riding on 8,171 acres of terrain, 16 alpine bowls and three glaciers.
Thanks to the area’s location, the resort each year averages more than 462 inches of snow and one of the longest ski seasons in North America.
Summer activities include hiking and biking trails, the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, and sightseeing on the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola.
The gondola is the world’s longest continual lift system and boasts several world records to its credit.
Each cabin carries 28 persons and makes the 2.73-mile span between Whistler and Blackcomb peaks in 11 minutes. It is the highest lift of it kind, with the longest unsupported span in the world (1.88 miles) and at one point the cars dangle 1,427 feet above the valley floor, the highest such span in the world.
